Dogecoin (DOGE) is an open-source cryptocurrency based on the mechanisms of Litecoin and Bitcoin. It was named after the Doge internet meme. Created by Billy Markus from Portland and Jackson Palmer, it was forked from Litecoin in December 2013.
Originally launched in 2013 as a joke, Dogecoin has since become one of the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Due to its fast block time (1 block per minute) and low transaction fees, it is well-suited for everyday purchases and payments.
